Branding

By looking at the exhibition areas and the layout, I reckon that 100% Tokyo theme is simplicity. Therefore, I decided to place the branding on the back of the chair is the best choice as it can be seen clearly even a user were to sit on the chair. The logo of the branding is loud and simple that can been seen from far to capture’s audience attention .

How to Fold?

Second Attempt

After countless of tries... at last I have made it. The progression of my chairs. From little's ones to the RIGHT one.
This is the last Xanita board. I am very caution on the measurement. This time round the width is 420mm followed by 380mm for the back seat. The chair is tested and it works.

First Attemp on Xanita Board

I had messy up my first attemp on the Xanita board. The measurements and the lengths of board required changes after each fold, this causes some miss caculation in the model. The measuremnet of the front seat has the right measurement (400mm), however the tapered back rest was only 320mm. This measurment does not allow people to move to the back of the seat as there's space constrain. User on the chair could not lean back.

Measurment has to be taken into consideration.

Final Template of my design
I have made some small changes in my design before starting on the Xanita Board. These were to change the shape and form of the chair. I wanted to incorperate a few more angles to the looked of the chair.

Final Model

My final design!!! Now it's time to execute it.

Exploration of Ideas through mock up

The paptonic chair was a great and inspiring exercise. I had lot fun doing that model. From this model I started taking sheets of paper to try out the different form and methods of folding based on a single sheet of paper.

I like the side profile of the chair and it can be easily folded by a single sheet.
Using a Xanita board to try out the triangular folding.

My first attempt of 1:1 mock dimension is 400,400,400mm. The measurement of the chair was prefect but there's problem in the structure of the model. This design has shown that it is not enough to hold the weight of a person when he/she leans back.
I have to re-structure the back of the chair. For further development I need to focus on structuring the chair.

My second attempt was to try folding my design in a scale down Xanita baord. I fail doing so due to the thickness of the board. It seem impossible to fold the chair out from the Xanita board.

FAILED attempt!!! I carried on doing mock up based on the same design I added a back cover to the chair so that it can hold the weight of a person. However, I do not like the design of the chair. It just looked squarish all over the side.
Followed on, I tired to hold the sides of the chair with a triangular form and create a back cover for the chair.
Mock up two. This time the structure of the chair is strong and is able to hold one's weight when one's lean on the back rest. Howerver, I do not like the form of the chair.

Another Attempt of the scale down mock-up. I have use a triangular locking system to hold the chair structure together. This make the chair look less blockish and it has interesting angle and form to it. But..... with the limitation of the material the template that I created cannot produce the chair. So how???
I looked through the designs I have created and started looking at the different views of the chair rather than the side view. I found a method in folding the chair.

PAPTONI CHAIR

The original design of the three concept was't a great as I have not carefully consider the strength of holding the user. The templete of my design is far too big to be folded by the single sheet of the card board which is (1200 by 1800mm). The 3 designs have interesting form on it's side view only as the other views were pretty boring.
The class exercise was great, it trigger new thoughts on designing card board chair.

Mock -up

This concept is a chair with a side table attached to it. It is designed to be placed at the cafe area where people can grab their food and have a rest at the same time. The side table is to allow people to placed their drinks while munching their food. The chair has a back rest that acts as an arm chair too.
A simple one sheet folded chair that can be placed in the exhibition areas for people to rest.
This chair concept is designed for outdoor purpose. The idea was to allow people to to rest around in the open space of 100% TOKYO as there are large amount of open field not used for the exhibitions.
